How do weapon (melee) animations work?

Question Title: How do weapon (melee) animations work?
Category: Graphics
Question: Are the weapons animated with the character? I'm asking because I was looking over the game manual in the weapons section and saw a true morningstar there. It's not like the ones that we have now in-game. With the current tech can the weapon be re-designed as a spiked ball chained to a handle? It'd be a great macer gift to see the spiked ball arc through the air crushing anything in it's path. Aren't there morningstars with more than one chain-linked bludgeoning device?

Answer: The weapon you are referring to is a flail. A ball attached by chain to a handle.

We can not achieve this in AC's engine currently. Objects you wield in your hands (shields, orbs, swords, etc.) cannot animate.

In fact, bows are made up of several segments, and animations exist to make them animate, but the system isn't there to allow it.
