The fire and smoke of the forge call to mind the wisps and trails seen in the massive nebula that dominates the night skies over Tuu. This similarity causes the superstitious men to believe that the women have somehow called down the power of the gods and accordingly allow the women to gain more power in their clan. With their advanced weapons, this clan dominates all rival clans and establishes a matriarchal rule.

Empress Cellaurai heralds this discovery and declares it the beginning of a new age for the Empire.

In addition, Delacim, now Asheron's sole apprentice and most talented student, has created portals specifically for the storage and transport of cargo and parcels. Asheron, not satisfied with portals just linking parts of his world, starts work on creating portals between worlds.

The discovery of an ancient Lich hidden deep in the mountainous regions of Haebrous prompts fears that the Dericost are practicing forbidden magics. Nothing could be farther from the truth, as most Dericost have come to hate the undead for abandoning them to the Yalaini's rule. Harsh persecution follows and descendants of the Dericost nobility, who call themselves Gelidites, flee the Haebrous reservations.

Under the guidance of the "Council of Three," they contract ships to transport them to Dereth. Once there, they hope to find a site to build a city they will call Frore. Ancient texts say this city will be an integral part of the Fourth Sending of Darkness, an apocalypse they feel will return them to power. However, they also feel this "Great Work" will take thousands of years and come to the difficult conclusion that, in order to see it completed, they must embrace undeath. Once they arrive in Dereth, they slaughter the ship's crews and use their remains in the rituals that will transform them into undead.

After finding a secluded spot to build Frore, the Gelidites begin using ancient geomancy spells to tunnel deep into the ground. In the process. they discover the missing sixth piece of the Crystal Array used to trap Bael'Zharon, although they are unaware of its origin.

After a year of studying the crystal piece, the talented Gelidite mage Frisith determines that it has a connection to power deep within the earth. He proposes using it to draw all the heat from the world, bringing about an ice age and the prophesied Fourth Sending.

Lugian
Fringe clans that resisted the rule of the Matriarchs conquer the capital city of Tukal, home of the Grand Assembly and Supreme Mother. The Supreme Mother flees to the mountainous region of Daegot, while the Supreme Father and an imposter remain behind and are murdered, convincing the invading clans that the Supreme Mother is dead.

Nali Valind decrees that the Sisters of Ithnaec are irreversibly contaminated by the teachings of the Falatacot and declares them heretics. The pilgrims that answer Valind's call slaughter the Sisters, putting some to the sword while others are burned at the stake. The only thing left behind by the crusaders is the shattered shell of the Ithnaec Cathedral.

Due to the importance the Gromnatross hold in Yalaini theology, returning crusaders approach the nest of the Gromnatross of Aerlinthe Island, seeking a blessing from the creature. The Gromnatross destroys them and leaves behind its nest and young, never to be seen again.

Gaerlan, who had accompanied his brother on a trip to Aerlinthe Island, discovers a ruined Gelidite Library. His study of the library's partially charred texts reveals that a sect of Gelidites had broken away from their brothers. They had hoped to master Elemental magics, but were destroyed by their brothers as heretics for laboring against their "Great Work." While a crime against the Northern Church, Gaerlan keeps this discovery a secret, hoping to master their magics and move out of his brother's shadow.
