| Answer = While saffron is usually considered to be yellow, the flowers of the plant can be several colors, including purple.<br /><br />The idea that it is yellow comes from the fact that it is cultivated for its yellow stigmas, which are what is used in medicine and other areas.<br /><br />However, if you buy saffron from an herbal shop, you may find that it is purple. I recall this quite clearly because once when I needed saffron, I spent something like $8.00 to get something that didn't even measure on a scientific weight scale... it was so tiny, and expensive that it left a lasting impression on me.
